  What is the Festival?

This summer will host Pukaar’s first multicultural festival, bringing together inspirational music and entertainment for all ages in Southampton. The event will take place in Nuffield theatre from 6pm to 10pm with local artists and musicians playing World Music. Singers, bands, musicians and DJs are encouraged to send their CV’s in the bands section. Outstanding talents will then be given the opportunity to perform on the main stage. THE ENTRY TO THE EVENT IS ABSOLUTELY FREE!!!!

  Aim of the Festival

Pukaar, the multicultural music project, aims to bring an eclectic mix of entertainment and events to the green pastures in Southampton’s bustling city centre. Pukaar’s mission is to bring people together through multicultural events for and with local bands, musicians, DJ’s and the international group of volunteers. Pukaar also offers music workshops, support to charity events and assistance to the refugee community. The festival will not only provide a platform for new musical talent in and around Southampton and the UK but will be a small attempt at bridging cultural gaps between communities and generations.

Chairman of Pukaar, Romail Gulzaar, hopes that the event will draw together Southampton’s multicultural residents to create an evening to remember. "I hope that this unique event will bring together many residents in the Southampton area. I think it is very important for such a multicultural city to unite, whether they are Asian, African or European, we should all embrace and share our wealth of culture."

  History

For 2 years running, Pukaar Project had been organsing frequent Curry parties which saw people from many cultural backgrounds. One of the best aspects of these parties was the live music. Each night featured a new band with a different taste of music on offer. Although, this was a great success, it soon became a problem for Romail Gulzar, who was bombarded with scores of musicians and talent knocking on his door asking to play in these parties. It simply wasn't possible to accomodate so many musicians. And so, an idea was born: a multicultural festival that would expose these musicans to a much wider audience. This prompted Romail to have a word with Ian Western (Manager Director, West Itchen Community Trust), who put pointed him in the direction of UNLtd, a company that was more than willing to provide financial support to lift this vision off the ground and getting it started. Encouraged by this he ventured for more sponsors who would lend a helping hand to promote and support this festival.
